About

Polkadot is a Layer 0 blockchain protocol that connects application-specific chains with shared security and cross-chain messaging.

Polkadot is a Layer 0 protocol built to support a multi-chain future. It lets application-specific Layer 1 chains, called parachains, plug into a shared-security model based on Nominated Proof of Stake, so new chains do not need to bootstrap their own validator set.

Parachains exchange messages through Cross-Consensus Messaging (XCM), and teams build them with the Polkadot SDK. Developers buy blockspace through agile coretime, and the DOT token is used for governance, staking and resource allocation. Parity is developing JAM as a future successor to the relay chain.

Key features

Parachains as application-specific Layer 1 chains; Shared security via Nominated Proof of Stake; Cross-Consensus Messaging (XCM); Polkadot SDK; Agile coretime for blockspace; On-chain governance and treasury; Bridges to external networks
