Spacelift Intent

Provision cloud infrastructure by describing it in plain language

Overview
Spacelift Intent is an MCP server that turns a described infrastructure need into real resources, skipping Terraform and OpenTofu code. The commercial version runs inside Spacelift, so OPA policies, approvals and audit trails apply, and drift detection can flag deviations. It is aimed at prototypes and non-critical workloads rather than production. The vendor says it cannot yet reuse existing OpenTofu or Terraform modules, and rollbacks are done by instructing Intent, not by reverting code.
Our verdict
Worth trying for fast, governed sandbox infrastructure, especially if you already use Spacelift. Keep it away from critical production workloads, which the vendor itself says still belong in IaC with GitOps.
Best for
Platform teams that want developers to spin up prototype infrastructure safely, without hand-written Terraform.
Avoid if
You need infrastructure changes reviewed as code in pull requests, or you rely on shared Terraform modules.
Pros
- Open-source edition is free to try
- Policy engine and audit trail apply to every action
- Created infrastructure can be promoted into IaC later
Cons
- Cannot reuse existing OpenTofu or Terraform modules yet
- Built for non-critical workloads, not production
- Commercial pricing is not published

Frequently asked questions
Does Spacelift Intent generate Terraform code?
No. The vendor says Intent calls provider APIs directly through Terraform providers, so there are no .tf files or plan and apply cycles.
Is Spacelift Intent free?
The open-source edition is a free, self-hosted binary. The commercial edition is part of the Spacelift platform and its price is not published.
Can I roll back changes made by Intent?
Every operation is logged. Rollbacks are not code reverts, but you can instruct Intent to delete or revert resources, or export them to code later.
