Amazon S3 is an object storage service from Amazon Web Services built for scalability, availability, security and performance. Teams use it for data lakes, cloud native applications, mobile apps and, very commonly, backup, restore and archive workloads. It is designed for 99.999999999% data durability and 99.99% availability by default.
For backup and retention, S3 offers several storage classes including S3 Standard, Intelligent-Tiering, Standard-Infrequent Access, and the Glacier tiers for archiving. Replication across or within regions, encryption by default, lifecycle management and integration with AWS Backup help companies meet recovery time, recovery point and compliance requirements. Many third party backup tools also use S3 as their storage target.
